Pantanal means "Swamp" in Portuguese. The region is a UNESCO protected area and the largest swamp area in the world. It covers a part of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina.
From October to April the whole area is under water. After this wet period, this area is one of world's largest open-air zoos. The Pantanal is extremely rich in exotic animals, including 700 species of birds, 100 species of mammals and 200 species of reptiles. The inhabitants of this area are mainly occupied with herding of cattle, such as the famous Gaucho shepherds.
