Motorcycles
During the European tour you ride your own motorcycle. In principle, any bike for this trip is suitable. Besides a big service before setting off, it is important that you leave with pretty much new tires. We also advise you to take a puncture repair kit.
Difficulty of the journey
This is perhaps the easiest trip of the "Europe" section. Primarily because the landscape consists exclusively of rolling hills and countryside. All asphalt roads on this tour are of fair to excellent quality. We also avoid busy roads and take local roads as much as we can, and the roads become quieter as we drive further northeast. However, you must take into account occasional slow traffic, crossing (domestic) animals, and other road users who do not exactly comply with traffic regulations. The medium sized capital cities are hardly ever a problem.
The total distance travelled on the tour is approximately 4200 km from door to door. Daily distances travelled range from 280 to 350 km - not counting your individual trip from home to the tour’s start/finish and back - and include sufficient breaks.
Accommodation
During this trip, we use a variety of mid-range accommodation options, ranging from a former convent run by students and volunteers to a major tourist hotel in St. Petersburg. All accommodation is based on a double room with en suite bathroom. A single room is available upon request. At most locations, the bikes can be parked on enclosed or open private grounds.
Ferryboat
During this trip we make a ferry crossing from Helsinki to Travemünde. This is included in the price. On board the ferry you have a double cabin at your disposal with private toilet and shower during the crossing.
Climate
The Baltic countries have hardly any extreme weather conditions. The weather during spring and early autumn can be quite changeable, and summers are usually pleasantly warm. Sudden heavy thunderstorms can provide a wet surprise in the summer, with the danger of aquaplaning.
Clothing
Mandatory is a helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, a good strong pair of motorcycle trousers with protection and sturdy high (mountain) boots. Waterproof motorcycle clothing or rain gear is also recommended.
Visa and driving license
Baltic countries do not require a visa, Russia however does. Also, Russia requires an international driver's license, type 1949, available at the Post Office, AA, or RAC (UK) / ANWB (Netherlands).
Compulsory Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance in Russia
It is required by the Russian government that any foreign vehicle within the borders of Russia, has a Russian liability insurance. Your own motorcycle liability insurance may possibly already provide cover for Russia. Please check your Green Card or contact your insurer. If you do not have coverage for Russia, you can take out a separate liability insurance. For more information, please contact us.
More details about the trip and items to bring can be found in the tour’s handbook which you will receive approximately one month prior to departure.
